WILLIAMSBURG FASHION WEEKEND IS BACK! AT SECRET PROJECT ROBOT FRI&SAT SEPT18&19th!

Williamsburg Fashion Weekend, the original innovator of unorthodox fashion shows in Brooklyn, opens its sixth season on September 18th and 19th, at Secret Project Robot. The group of designers we assembled this year, with their finger on the pulse of our fashionable neighbourhood, will display the diverse elements that make up what Williamsburg fashion aesthetic is about, right now!
Two designers from two of our favorite Williamsburg boutiques, (Erin Weckerle for Sodafine), (Sirius* for Treehouse, Brooklyn) have teamed up to show off their latest hand-made, one of a kind creations. Their past shows have always blown us away, we can't wait to see what they will surprise us with this season!

Racecar! by Nettie Tiso offers clothing for both men and women. The design concept this season fuses modern and historic late 1800's characteristics to create all new forms. It is utilitarian clothing that is made unique with contemporary eccentricities and western motifs.

Markus Hicks of SDN, continues his innovative take on the "classics" with impecable workmanship, eco-friendly fabrics and socially responsible production ethics. Markus promises to wow us with a choreographed-theatrical performance for his presentation! sarahdixonsnova.com

Raab West of Yard, with cool attitude and vibrant colors, hand-dyed by the designer himself, will show garments that mix the relaxed attitude of the Caribbean with NY street-smarts. The movie "The Wiz" will be the theme of Raab's show as a tribute to Michael Jackson!

if you can, please attend this event!

treehouse's dear friend Liz of the xquizzy notebook fame is putting on this raffle/fundraiser....in her words:
"Hello everyone.
As some of you may already know, my friend Elizabeth Eagle and I traveled to Kenya in March to teach art in Ndonyo Wasin Primary School. The experience was astounding, humbling, inspiring and often breath taking. We took great volumes of pictures hoping to capture what we saw/felt. There must be 30 gigs of images between us!
Elizabeth had the fantastic idea of putting together a benefit to support the children of Ndonyo Wasin as they look for ways to pay for their education. It takes $1000 to sponsor a child going into secondary school: that's room, board, books, classes the works! We're hoping we can raise enough cash to line the pockets of The Thorn Tree Project and Orphans of Rwanda. There will be handmade Samburu jewelry and Rwandan baskets. Photos priced to $ell. And let's not overlook snacks and drinks! Bring yourself AND your wallet down to Court Street next week. "
hope to see you there!

urban gardening in the 'burg
I'm now
heading up North Brooklyn's NAG (Neighbors Allied for Good Growth)
Open Space Committee. We're working on a guerrilla gardening
initiative this spring to get the Williamsburg/Greenpoint community
active in maintaining and improving our open spaces. Our first
workshop is this Saturday, March 21st, to be followed by several more!
The invite is listed below..
Also if you have any open space/gardening/sustainability projects
you'd like us to host or rally volunteers for, I would LOVE to hear
about them.
Spread your seed, everybody!
Best,
Emily Gallagher
Host:
NAG Open Space Group
Date:
Saturday, March 21, 2009
Time:
3:00pm - 6:00pm
Location:
NAG Office
Street:
101 Kent Street at North 8th
Email:
openspace@nag-brooklyn.org
On Saturday NAG Open Space working group will hold a workshop to
create seed balls, a land reclamation strategy for derelict, neglected
and abandoned land. The strategy of combining Terra cotta clay and
hardy annual seeds into dried pellets has been used by groups for
hundreds of years, including the famous London guerrilla gardening
groups lead by Richard Reynolds, as well as natural farmer Masanobu
Fukuoka, and originated as a Native American farming strategy.
NAG (Neighbors Allied for Good Growth) will be constructing the seed
balls (containing wildflower seeds) on Saturday, March 21st, and
distributing them on Saturday, March 28th to be cast into abandoned
lots and neglected patches of land all over North Brooklyn at the
participants discretion.
